The GitHub to Markdown Converter uses the source type to decide what to read. A repository link provides its overview and README; a file link targets that file. Issues and pull requests retain the opening post and available replies. Discussions are read when their public page exposes the conversation. This gives each input a useful text representation instead of copying the site navigation and controls.

Choose the smallest useful source

Paste the public link closest to the information you need. Use a file or issue link when a repository overview would be too broad. Click Fetch to read the source and see its estimated word count, then confirm the Credit ceiling. GitHub’s unauthenticated request limits still apply. Large threads are bounded, and this workflow does not clone a repository, download every branch, or follow every linked issue.

Review before adding it to your knowledge base

Check the repository name, file path, code blocks, thread order, and source context before reusing the Markdown. A successful conversion is a snapshot of readable public content at that time. It does not imply that a software example is secure, that an issue is resolved, or that a comment reflects the project’s current guidance. Keep the source nearby so you can check updates and attribution.

Can I import private repositories?

Private repository authentication is not connected here. Export a text file you can access and upload it instead; never paste tokens or authenticated URLs.

Are images and attachments included?

Remote images and binary attachments are not downloaded by the URL route. Review image labels and follow the original source when an illustration is necessary to understand the text.
