Files to words

PDF to Text Converter

Extract readable text from a PDF without copying page by page. The PDF to text converter handles selectable text and routes scanned pages through OCR, with an estimate before processing.

Free: 25 MB per file. Starter and Pro: 50 MB per file. PDF page limits: Free 25, Starter 200, Pro 500 pages; the estimate also checks the processing limit.

  1. Choose your source and export format.
  2. See the Credit estimate and processing progress.
  3. Read the result and download your file.

Selectable pages and scanned pages differ

A digital PDF often stores text directly; a scan stores a picture of the page. A mixed document can contain both. Markovo measures the source and estimates the relevant page work before you confirm. Clear scans improve OCR. Rotated pages, faint printing, handwriting and complex backgrounds need more review than clean selectable text.

Read across columns and tables

PDF coordinates do not always encode the intended reading order. Review multi-column articles, sidebars, footnotes and tables in Reader before relying on an extraction. TXT removes Markdown syntax and represents table rows with readable separated cells; it does not recreate a page layout. Choose Word for editable headings and tables, or keep the Markdown bundle when extracted images matter.

Select only the pages you need

The existing PDF page-range option can narrow an estimate to selected pages. Check the page count and Credits before confirming. Password-protected or damaged PDFs must be repaired or unlocked in your own editor first. An unsuccessful job releases its reserved Credits. A successful extraction stays downloadable until the retention time shown on the job.

File limits and account allowance

Free: 25 MB per file. Starter and Pro: 50 MB per file. PDF page limits: Free 25, Starter 200, Pro 500 pages; the estimate also checks the processing limit. Sizes use binary units: 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes. Sign in for the Free allowance; a guest preview is not the same as a Free account.

Free includes 25 Credits per month. Starter is $3.99 per month with 200 Credits, and Pro is $7.99 per month with 500 Credits. Paid plans do not remove file validation or the need for a sufficient balance. See pricing and Credits for the current catalog.

Estimate, processing and downloads

The estimate follows extracted source units. Digital PDF pages cost 0.1 Credit each and OCR pages cost 0.5 Credit each. Text, HTML and EPUB use 0.05 Credit per 1,000 extracted words, with minimums of 0.11 Credit for text/HTML and 0.07 Credit for EPUB. Image OCR is billed per processed page. Your exact estimate appears before confirmation.

Upload time depends on the connection and source size. Processing also depends on duration, page complexity and queue load; the estimate and task progress are indicative, not a fixed completion promise. Large uploads can resume missing parts. Failed processing releases reserved Credits; a successful task settles once.

Reader displays the same canonical result for TXT, Word and Markdown. Switching exports does not start another conversion. DOCX supports editable headings, lists, tables, links and supported result-owned images. TXT keeps readable text and table cells. The Word exporter accepts up to 1 MB of canonical Markdown, 2,000 content blocks, 512 table cells and 32 images, with 2 MB per image and 8 MB of image data; use the Markdown image bundle for larger documents.

Retention and review

Free results are retained for 1 hour, Starter for 7 days and Pro for 30 days after completion. The task shows the exact expiry. Download before it expires, or delete it early from History. Temporary sources are removed after processing or expiry; a guest-preview original can remain available until its preview session expires. Review uncertain words, table order and important figures before reuse. Read the privacy policy for processing details.

PDF to Text questions

Can I extract text from a scanned PDF?

Scanned pages use OCR. Review faint print, handwriting and complex layouts; OCR quality depends on the source image.

Does TXT preserve the PDF’s page layout?

TXT preserves readable text, paragraphs and table content. It does not retain exact page coordinates, fonts or pagination.

Does downloading another format spend more Credits?

No. Markdown, Word and TXT downloads reuse the saved conversion, with one Credit settlement. A new source conversion is a separate job.

How long can I download the result?

Results are retained for 1 hour on Free, 7 days on Starter and 30 days on Pro. The job shows its exact expiry. You can delete stored files earlier from History.

What happens if conversion fails?

An unsuccessful conversion releases frozen Credits. If a release needs repair, the task shows its recovery state. Retrying a download does not create a second conversion.
